.. so who needs the Internet anyway? |
The Government’s own Information Society Initiative declared;
“There is a danger that companies who dismiss the Internet’s potential will increasingly lose market share to those who have got involved.”
No business, big or small, can afford to dismiss the benefits of going online...
Many of your competitors are possibly already online. And if your business sells to medium/large corporations, it is inevitable that they will migrate to ordering everything online to save money. General consumers are also becoming more familiar with interacting with services provided via web sites. Therefore to continue to do business, you will have to be on the Internet.
Being online tells your customers and business partners that you run a forward thinking company. It also allows you to reach far more potential customers, who are likely to be amongst the most affluent members of society, than by any other means.
All this and you are able to do business 24 hours, 365 days a year while saving money because transactions done over the Internet cost much less than paper based ones.
Ok you have decided that it is now time to give your business the opportunity of the benefits that the Internet can offer...
What do you need?
Obviously you need a web site... this at least informs people of your company's existence.
A so-called brochure site is probably the most common, but the better sites are those that invite interaction and encourage return visits.
E-commerce is an area widely spoken about and selling your products online may require an investment in additional software and credit card acceptance facilities - but this need not be overly expensive.
But to interact over the Internet you don’t have to sell - you could be a recruitment company allowing people to apply for vacancies online or simply be providing a presentation of your products pointing consumers to their nearest retail outlet.
Building your site
While it is possible to build your own web site, you must remember that your Internet site will hopefully be seen by more people than any other medium you company currently uses to promote its services.
I’m sure you wouldn’t dream of producing your own full colour advertisement and magazine, so what makes you think you would be any more capable of producing an effective, good quality web site... Stop and think!
